Beavers in Dexter, MI

Beavers in Dexter, MI

I've been meaning to write something about this for quite a while now.

It's been over a century since beavers in our area were hunted & trapped so extensively that you could easily go your entire life without seeing any sign of one. Over the past couple years, though — perhaps most famously at Matthei Botanical Gardens — beavers have made a dramatic recovery in the Huron River watershed, at least in Washtenaw County. Recently, beaver sign has become visible if not common in Dexter, Hudson Mills Metropark, and Pinckney & Waterloo State Rec Areas, just to name a few.

I managed to capture some photos & videos of beavers at work in Dexter, eating & gathering food for the winter. Turn the sound up for the videos, so you can hear them munching on the tree's bark — and in one video, you'll hear a pack of coyotes in the background too!
